Clients

living room couch

Clients who wanted a home, a housing development, a school, a church or a medical/ dental clinic complex would be interviewed, usually in the evening  in this living room, by Neutra and his colleagues. Neutra often used a detailed questionnaire and took careful notes of the clients' programmatic needs. About 300 projects were designed here. Clients included:

educator Nora Sterry , who helped Neutra design the first modern school in Los Angeles in 1935

TV evangelist Robert Shuller for whom Neutra designed a drive-in church in 1961

Movie director Joseph von Sternberg, who introduced Marlene Dietrich to the US.  Neutra designed an all metal house with a moat around it for him in 1936

Department store owner and art connoisseur Edgar J Kauffmann who commissioned FL Wright tobuild his summer house Falling Water and who commissioned Neutra to build his winter Desert House in Palm Springs in 1946

Philanthropist, art connoisseur and later Under Secretary of the Navy, John Nicholas Brown who commissioned Neutra for an experimental house in 1938
